Three Panther matmen finish undefeated as team places third

WOODWARD — Danny Nordquist (120 pounds), George Appleseth (132) and Tyler Van Houten (152) all finished with spotless marks, while Gunnar Grunsted (170) and Dalton Holmes (195) both posted 4-1 records to help the Panorama wrestlers place third in the WCC Duals Saturday.

Van Meter/Earlham claimed the top spot and Woodward-Granger second, with Panorama third. West Central Valley was fourth, Ogden fifth and AC/GC sixth.

Panorama opened with a 60-15 win over AC/GC before falling to W-G, 39-33. A 48-21 win over Ogden followed, with VM/E topping Panorama, 44-25. The Panthers were 49-23 victors over WCV in their final dual to move into third place.

Van Houten had won his 100th career match Thursday, with Appleseth matching the feat Saturday. The later won three times by pinfall, once by major decision and received one forfeit in finishing 5-0.

Nordquist did the same, with three pins, a major decision and forfeit generating a 5-0 mark, while Van Houten scored a pin at 152 and a fall at 160 while being granted two forfeits at 152 to finish 4-0.

Grunsted wrestled twice at 160, winning by fall and dropping a 4-3 decision. He tallied wins by fall, decision and forfeit at 170 to finish Saturday’s action with a 4-1 mark.

Also 4-1 was Holmes, who pinned two foes, won a decision over another and dropped a 4-1 decision at 195.

Noah Kirtley won in sudden victory 1 and received two forfeits to finish 3-2 at 138 pounds, with Kaleb Stogdill receiving a forfeit at 152 and one at 145 while also scoring a pin at 145 to finish 3-3.

Ondrej Komora won by fall at 152 and received a forfeit at 160 before losing by fall at 160 to end his afternoon 2-1 overall.

Trevor Carey (182) was the lone Panther to have all five of matches contested. Two wins by fall and a 7-0 decision allowed Carey to depart with a 3-2 mark.

Brady Howard (220) was 3-2 with one win by fall, one by decision and one via forfeit, with Dalton Bennett (285) 3-2 with a victory by pin and two from forfeits.

Panorama will return to action Jan. 5 with a trip to Southeast Valley in Gowrie. The Panthers will then compete in the Coon Rapids-Bayard Invitational Jan. 7.
