The quilters at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Perry dedicated 47 handmade quilts at last Sunday’s service prior to donating them to Hope Ministries in Des Moines, a leader in serving the needs of the homeless population in the metro area.
Trinity Pastor Ken Bose said the quilters have been donating their wares for many years by the local chapter of the Lutheran Womens Missionary League, with Ella Pennington as the project’s main organizer and other volunteers including Sue Bose, Linda Kirkman, Jill Anderson, Naomi Luett and Pastor Bose himself.
“All are members of Trinity except Naomi,” Bose said, “but she always comes to help. Ella is the power behind it. She turned 90 this year.”
The quilting begins in the spring and lasts all year, Bose said. The quilts are blessed prior to delivering them to Hope Ministries, with the hope, Bose said, that “as they are taking them out, they feel the warmth of Christ and give God the glory.”
Planning for next year’s quilts is already beginning.
“Anyone who wishes to help is welcome to join us,” Bose said. “We will begin again shortly after the first of the year.”
The quilters will meet Friday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon, followed by a light lunch.
