Minburn American Legion Post 99 members Don Richardson of Minburn and Tom Sloss of the Minburn were assisted Wednesday by Violet Hill Cemetery sexton Richie Steadman of Perry and Mike Rowley of Clive, a member of the Grenville M. Dodge Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War, to install a 180-pound monument to mark the grave of U.S. Civil War veteran Jonathan Nelson.

Nelson was a private in Company H of the 5th Iowa Cavalry. He died in 1925. The replacement stone was obtained from U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and positioned on Nelson’s plot after removal of the broken stone and its concrete base.
