MARTENSDALE — Returning state qualifier and undefeated Martensdale-St. Marys grabbed an early 2-0 lead en route to a 3-1 non-conference victory over visiting Woodward-Granger in non-conference baseball Tuesday.
The Blue Devils (8-0) plated two second-inning runs to post an early lead. W-G (6-2-1) countered with a run of their own in the fourth, but M-SM tacked on the final score of the game in the bottom of the fifth to set the eventual outcome.
Both teams received solid pitching against stout offenses. W-G senior Alex Bice went the distance, yielding three runs (two earned) on five hits in six innings. He struck out eight, walked two and hit one. M-SM senior Isaac Gavin tossed seven frames of four-hit ball, allowing one run while tallying eight strikeouts.
W-G scored when Reese Jamison doubled and was driven home bu a Colby Tague base hit. Bryce Achenbach and Worth Henry also had hits for the guests.
The 6-7-8 spots in the M-SM lineup did the most damage. Gavin had a single and a run, Sean Miklus provided a double, and Troy Holt had two singles and two RBIs from the eight-spot on the card.
W-G hosts Madrid tonight, visits ADM Thursday and returns to Granger to entertain South Tama Friday.
