ADEL, Iowa — The Dallas County Sheriff’s office issued a statement late Monday morning about the fire on the bike trail bridge located on the east side of Adel.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office said, and arson has not been ruled out as a cause.
“The bridge sustained significant damage and is currently unsafe for use,” the statement said. “It is important to note that this section of the trail was already closed for scheduled maintenance and improvements.”
Due to the bridge’s location and access challenges, portions of U.S. Highway 6 were temporarily closed while firefighters were in the area, the sheriff’s office said.
“The difficult terrain limited firefighting access and impacted the response,” the statement said.
Fire crews from Adel, Dallas Center, De Soto, Redfield, Minburn, Van Meter, and Waukee assisted in extinguishing the fire.
