UPDATE: Carroll man killed in Sunday shootout identified

Joshua Lee Ewing, 26, of Carroll was killed Sunday after exchanging gunfire with Iowa State Patrol Trooper Justin Parman about three miles west of Moorland, Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation identified Monday the man killed Sunday in the officer-involved shooting near Moorland, Iowa, as Joshua Lee Ewing, 26, of Carroll.

Ewing was killed after exchanging gunfire with Iowa State Patrol Trooper Justin Parman.

According to the DCI, Parman responded Sunday afternoon to a motorist assist in the 2300 block of Carter Avenue, a location about three miles west of Moorland, and encountered Ewing in a dispute with a woman.

Ewing reportedly pointed and fired a handgun at Parman, who returned fire, killing Ewing.

An autopsy is scheduled with the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office for Tuesday, May 1.

The incident remains under investigation, with the final report pending the autopsy and laboratory tests, the DCI statement said. Upon completion, all information will be forwarded to the Webster County Attorney’s office for review.

The Webster County town of Moorland, population 169, lies about six miles southwest of Fort Dodge near U.S. Highway 20.
