UPDATE: Distressed man shoots himself in Woodward

Law enforcement is in a standoff with an armed man at this hour at 307 E. Second St. in Woodward, according to public safety radio traffic.

WOODWARD, Iowa — A distressed man shot himself with a .22 caliber pistol about 5:45 p.m. after engaging law enforcement in a standoff for about one hour, according to public safety radio traffic.

Dallas County EMS is treating the victim on the scene at this hour, and an air ambulance has been paged.

No other injuries are reported in the incident.

The incident began about 4:45 p.m. at 307 E. Second St., where a 33-year-old homeless man was found holding a gun to his head and shouting while walking around the yard of the residence, according to radio traffic.

Nearby roadways were closed, and motorists were advised to avoid the area.

A 77-year-old female was an occupant inside of the residence at the time of the incident, according to radio traffic. Her condition is unknown at this hour.

Negotiators from the metro and a K9 unit were summoned to the scene.

The property is owned by George H. Hass of Bouton, according to county records.

The Granger Police Department, Perry Police Department, Dallas County Sheriff’s office and Iowa State Patrol responded.
