BOONE, Iowa — Six officers of the Boone Police Department have been placed on administrative leave while authorities investigate their fatal shooting Sunday of a knife-wielding man.
Boone Police Chief John Wiebold said Timothy Wayne Anderson, 48, of 620 Second St. in Boone was killed after charging officers with a knife when they responded to a 911 call reporting “active domestic abuse” at 4:52 p.m.
The female caller said Anderson “was threatening her and another person with a knife,” Wiebold said. “When officers arrived at the residence, the officers could hear yelling and screaming coming from inside the residence.”
Wiebold said police tried to enter the duplex, and “Anderson immediately charged at them while still holding the knife.” He said the officers “attempted to retreat” and “told Anderson to drop the knife. Multiple officers then fired their weapons, striking Anderson.”
Body camera footage and an audio recording of the 911 call were released by the department.
Wiebold would not confirm how many shots were fired or whether all the officers discharged their weapons.
The six Boone Police Department officers involved in the incident were Capt. Lonnie Hikiji and officers Daniel Lynch, Joseph Slight, Connor McCuen, Cole Hilsabeck and Seth McCrea.
The officers comprise one-third of the Boone Police Department, Wiebold said.
Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene and transported to the Iowa office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24, Wiebold said.
Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Mike Motsinger joined Wiebold at the Monday afternoon press conference at the Boone Police Department headquarters.
Boone Police Department officers remaining on duty include Commander Charles Pepples,
Sgt. Nathan Kester, Sgt. Ryan Palmer, officers Michael Frazier, Cory Rose, Mario Gonzalez and Logan Sturtz, part-time officers Steve Naeve and Lance Kooiker, Detective John Mayse and investigators Josh Olsen and Ethan Bailey.
Officer Joseph Slight was also a party to the last officer-involved shooting in Boone, which occurred June 27, 2016. Slight and Kester were later ruled justified in their use of deadly force against Michael Ervan Disbrowe, 28, of Boone, who was believed to be armed. Disbrowe was later determined to be brandishing an airsoft gun.
