Woodward-Granger prepares to snap the ball against visiting Martensdale-St. Marys in their season opening game August 28. The Hawks will host Southwest Valley Friday at 7 p.m. for Homecoming.

WOODWARD — Three dynamic plays put Woodward-Granger into a 13-0 an early lead against Panorama last Friday, but the Panthers were not rattled, and responded to post a 47-13 win in Class 1A District 8 action.

With thanks to W-G assistant coach Derek Wilkins, here are three extended highlights from the game. W-G will be at home again Friday when they host Southwest Valley for Homecoming at 7 p.m.

W-G senior Race Brant breaks loose to return the opening kickoff to the Panorama 17. On the first offensive snap of the game, sophomore fullback runs free between the blocks of center Josh Graves and left guard James Barger, with a block from left tackle Drew Jacobson also helped clear the way for a 17-yard touchdown. Cole Moran booted the point-after kick (video stops before kick is attempted).

Panorama fumbled the ball away three times in the game, with Brant ripping the pigskin from the arms of Gabe Richey and racing 32 yards for a score on the second offensive snap of Panorama’s second offensive possession in the game.

The Panthers had stopped their own first drive by losing a fumble on the possession prior to Brant’s fumble return TD. While both Tory Santi and Austin Scharlau recovered fumbles in the game, it is unclear which Hawk fell on this turnover.
