BOONE — Perry’s Ivan Garcia booted a 37-yard field goal early in the first quarter to give the Bluejays a 3-0 lead over host Boone last Friday, but the visitors would not score again until less than 20 seconds remained in the game as the Toreadors posted a 27-10 victory.
Despite allowing three touchdowns through the air, the Perry pass defense held Class 3A’s top-ranked passing attack and second-leading receiver to well below their averages. Thanks goes out to Bluejay assistant coach Matt Hardy for the video highlights posted here.

Perry had early momentum when Brandon Juarez took a tipped pass from just past midfield all the way to the one-yard line, with teammate Jacob Thompson providing a final block on the run-back. Unfortunately, a block-in-the-back penalty moved the ball back nearly 40 yards, with the Jays eventually settling for Garcia’s field goal.
Defensive end Solomon Pierce (83) tips a Tanner Schminke pass, which is nearly intercepted by the Perry defense, including defensive tackle Tyler Soll (67).
Perry linebacker Mark Campos (28) dropped back into coverage and into the passing lanes, where he has able to knock away a pass that could have resulted in a big gain for Boone.
Senior tailback Eli Saemisch (27) follows the blocks of tight end Marcus Meri (84) and fullback Adan Medina (35) for a gain of eight yards, with Taviar Lucas (13) adding a downfield block to aid the run.
Reserve quarterback Wyatt Halling is a tad high on this pass in the final minute, which was intended for Jacob Thompson (22). Boone defender Raithe Clemons (25) batted the ball away, but the pigskin landed in the hands of Taviar Lucas (13), who carried it the final 22 yards for a 50-yard touchdown.
Perry returns to action Friday with a trip to Carroll as they continue Class 3A District 2 play. The team will be back at Dewey Field October 2 against Algona for Homecoming.
