Fifteen Perry-area voters took a crash course in the Iowa Democratic caucuses Wednesday night at the Perry Public Library.

Truely Wingert, a staff member with the Iowa Democratic Party, led a 90-minute training session for citizens wishing to assist at the Monday, Feb. 3 Iowa caucuses. Volunteer positions range from temporary caucus chairs and secretaries to delegates to the county and district conventions.

Wingert explained the caucus machinery and the math behind candidate viability. She said record turnout is expected for the quadrennial exercise in presidential politics.

The Iowa caucuses are the first nominating contest in the Democratic Party presidential primaries for the 2020 presidential election. The state’s closed caucuses award 49 delegates, of which 41 are pledged delegates allocated on the basis of the caucus results.
