GRANGER — A three-run first and two-run second inning proved to be enough for the Woodward-Granger baseball team, as the Hawks went on to record a 6-4 win over visiting Clarke in non-conference play Thursday.
Four pitchers saw time on the hump for the Hawks (3-1), with Cole Theisen the winner after starting and tossing three frames while striking out two. Jay Dorenkamp were 2-1/3 innings, yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits while fanning two, with Nick Brummond also touched for two runs (one earned) on two hits while whiffing one in one frame. Alex Bice cleaned up, striking out one in recording the final two outs.
Clarke scored one in the top of the fourth, but W-G countered with a tally in the fifth to set the score at 6-1. The Indians added a run in the sixth, then plated two in the seventh, but could not continue the rally long enough to completely catch up in falling to 0-6 on the season.
Bryce Achenbach had a single and a double for W-G, with Dorenkamp hitting a triple. Reese Jamison drove in two runs and had a double, with Theisen adding a base hit and a RBI. Matt Buch and Brummong also had RBIs, with Achenbach, Theisen, Jamison, Joe Rhodes, Worth Henry and Brandon Worley each scoring once.
The Hawks drew six walks and stole six bases in claiming the victory.
