W-G cross country runs at R-S Invite

STORY CITY — The season continued in warm weather Thursday when the Woodward-Granger harriers took part in the Roland-Story Invitational.

The W-G girls were 10th in a 14-team field, with the Hawk boys placing 10th in a 16-team competition.

Dike-New Hartford (49), Nevada (59) and Bondurant-Farrar (114) claimed the top three team spots on the girls side, with W-G posting 228 points.

D-NH freshman Taylor Kvale won the 155-runner girls race in 21 minutes, 24 seconds, with Kyle Tjernagel of R-S second at 22:09 and Ellie Tuhn of Nevada third in 22:19.

Josie Noland finished 13th overall for Woodward-Granger with a clocking of 23:58. The four other Hawks to score finished within seven spots of each other, but were 38 places behind Noland.

Posey Robinson, Ava Petersen, Natalie Helbling and Bella Milosevich were 51-53-54-57 for W-G, all finishing in their 26th minute. Robinson crossed in the 21st second, Petersen in the 26th, Helbling in the 27th and Milosevich in the 51st.

Kate Grell (27:24) was 62nd and Chloe David (27:39) 65th for the varsity, but neither had their place used for the team total.

Class 1A top-ranked Madrid used top-rated Sean McDermott’s winning time of 16:56 to help score only 29 points and win the boys race. Logan Peters (17:36) and Quinton Grove (17:38) were 2-3 overall to lift South Hamilton to the boys runner-up spot with 79 points. Host R-S was third with 99 points, with W-G tallying 268 points.

Trevor Faltonson was in action for the first time this season and made the most of his initial appearance, leading the Hawks with a 31st-place finish in 19:12.

Alex Bice was 44th in 19:55, Dylan Steele 50th in 20:09, Xavier Ibarra 65th in 20:42 and Noah Gleason 78th in 21:39 to account for the W-G scoring. Caleb Jones (79th, 21:40) was a second from scoring for the varsity, with Alex Foster 102nd in 23:22.

W-G will run tonight at Waukee. They will then return to action October 1 with a visit to the Nodaway Valley Invite.
