W-G cross country teams compete at Roland-Story

STORY CITY — The Woodward-Granger harriers participated in the Roland-Story Invitational last Thursday, with both the Hawk boys and girls running in the varsity and middle school races.

DC-G won the girls varsity race with a near-perfect score of 17, with the five scoring Fillies placing 1-2-3-4-7, which easily outdistanced Nevada, who placed second with 91 points. Woodward-Granger was 11th of 14 teams with 272 points. A total of 128 runners competed in the race, with 91 scoring spots recorded.

Lexi Smith of DC-G won the individual title in 21 minutes, 7.92 seconds.

Sophomore Josie Noland was 29th for the Hawks in 24:04.14. Senior Regan Kaufman and freshman Natalie Helbling finished in 25:20.94 and 25:24.71, respectively, for 43rd and 44th place. Savannah David, a senior, was 69th in 27:22.66, with fellow senior Natalie Faultonson 87th in 31:17.86.

Drake VanBaale’s 16:59.18 won the boys varsity race for Bondurant-Farrar, helping B-F win the team crown with 65 points. South Hamilton was second with 85 points, with W-G 12th of 14 squads with a score of 370. The boys race had 207 entrants, with 95 places counted for scoring.

Juniors Chandler Cavanaugh and Hunter Pierce were the top two placers for the Hawks, crossing in 20:12.17 and 20:46.71, respectively. Three freshmen also scored for W-G, with Cody Garland (74th, 20:54.65), Kaya Bowlsby (82nd, 22:00.8) and Alex Bice (84th, 22:20.01), with freshman Andrew Anderson (22:34.91) running for the varsity but not having his 86th place finish scored.

North Polk (23) and Nevada (86) were the top two teams in the girls two-mile middle school race. W-G did not have the five runners required to generate an official team score in a field of 119 runners, of which 68 were scored.

Four seventh graders ran for W-G and, had one additional Hawk been in the field, would have placed 32nd, 42nd, 43rd and 57th. Katie Grell (16:04.14), Sydney Grell (16:49.13), Makenzie Dresback (16:56.86) and Kaitlyn Smith (18:56.36) were the Hawks in action.

Gilbert (79) and North Polk (98) led the boys middle school team scoring, with 131 racers in action, of which 68 had their places scored.

Eighth-grader Trevor Faultonson (12:56.15) and seventh-grader Lucas Hansen (18:52.44) ran for W-G and would have placed 13th and 68th had the Hawks entered a full squad.

Woodward-Granger will return to action Thursday with a visit to the West Central Valley Invitational at the 5×80 Golf Course in Menlo.
