WOODWARD — Head coach Gary Dresback will be leading the Woodward-Granger girls cagers into what Hawk loyalists hope will be a second half as strong as the first when the team resumes play Friday, when they host Madrid.

W-G is 6-1 overall and is tied atop the WCAC with DMC at 5-0 in league play. The Hawks are riding a five-game win steak, a stretch that includes a pair of one-point wins and one four-point victory. W-G was 3-7 at the holiday break last year en route to an 11-12 finish.

The team is averaging 41.9 points per game while shooting 37.6 percent from the floor and 54.7 percent at the foul line while connecting on 18-of-68 (26.5 percent) behind the 3-point arc. W-G is pulling down 26.4 rebounds per outing, has 48 assists and 73 steals and is guilty of 112 turnovers.

Emma Anderson (11.9 points per game), Katelyn Scharlau (8.7), and Finley Fitzgerald (7.6) lead the offense. Anderson is 8-of-21 (38.1 percent) to lead the team in treys, and has 18 assists and 16 steals while Scharlau averages 6.8 boards per game and is shooting 15-of-22 (68.2 percent) at the foul line. Fitzgerald has contributed 14 steals to help the defense.

Darby Nixon has played a key role, averaging 6.7 points while sinking 5-of-11 3-pointers and 18-of-24 free throws.

Mae Anderson’s 3.6 points and 3.7 caroms per game and the 2.4 points and 2.9 boards per outing from Natalie Helbling have also sparked the team.

Madrid visits W-G Friday, with the Hawks hosting Glidden-Ralston for a girls-only junior varsity/varsity set Jan. 6. W-G travels to Pleasantville Jan. 7 and then entertains AC/GC Jan. 10.
