
WOODWARD — Defensive back Bryce Achenbach and linebacker Gabe Yingst have collected Class 1A All-State honors by the Iowa Print Sportswriters Association.
Achenbach, a junior, finished with 39 solo and 42 assisted (each counts as half a tackle) tackles for 60 total stops. He had one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery while intercepting four passes for 85 total return yards. He returned one theft 36 yards for a touchdown.
Yingst, a senior, led W-G with 47 solo and 66 assisted denials for 80 total tackles. He made seven stops behind the line of scrimmage and was credited with three solo quarterback sacks.
Achenbach was selected for the 1A First Team Defense and Yingst to the Second Team. Their efforts helped W-G finish 5-4 overall and 2-3 in District 7. Of the four Hawk losses, two came to teams reaching the semifinals, one the quarterfinals and another the first round of the playoffs.
