WOODWARD — The Woodward-Granger volleyball team enjoyed two success Tuesday.

The first was a 3-0 sweep of Madrid in West Central Conference action on scores of 25-10, 25-11 and 25-18.

The other — and in all ways the more important of the two — was the generation of over $3,000 in donations which will be given to the American Cancer Society.

Tuesday’s match was the annual Cancer Awareness contest at W-G, with Hawk netter and recently crowned Homecoming Queen Mikayla Saak using the event as her senior project. Saak helped organize a freewill breakfast feed before the game as well as a silent auction of numerous and varied items. Funds were also raised by the sale of t-shirts for the match and by the sponsoring of ace serves, in which donors pledged a certain amount for each ace serve recorded by the Hawks in the match, with 12 being the final tally.

“I am very proud of Mikayla and all she did in organizing and helping with this,” W-G head coach Meg Jackson said. “To raise over $3,000 is just phenomenal and she deserves credit and so do the many generous donors we had tonight.”

The match also gave Jackson reason to be proud. Normally sparing in her praise, the veteran coach said she was “happy with how we played tonight.”

“We had a little lull in the third game, but otherwise we played very well,” she said. “I told our setters that they regulate the tempo of things, and once we got in a rhythm they picked up the pace and we got our offense going.”
