LAKE CITY, IA — Woodward-Granger avenged a bitter loss last season to South Central Calhoun with a 49-20 win Friday on the Titans home turf, a victory that assures the Hawks of a playoff spot.
W-G (4-3, 3-1 in Class 1A District 2) will finish second even should they lose this week and have the unlikely event of upsets by Belmond-Klemme and Eagle Grove play out.
SCC (3-4, 2-2) held a 7-6 lead after one quarter against W-G, but a 22-7 second quarter pushed the guests into a 28-14 halftime lead. Three unanswered touchdowns in the third frame swelled the margin to 49-14, with the Titans adding a final score in the fourth quarter.
Hawk quarterback Carter Moran had one his better days of the season, completing 15-of-23 passes for 307 yards and two TDs while being intercepted once. Bryan Jesse’s one attempt was intercepted, with Brody Nardini 0-for-1.
Dane Polich (3-88, 1 TD) and Nardini (4-40, 1 TD) both found the end zone, with Nick Rees (3-79), Max Dalton (2-40), Dylan McCaulley (2-60), and Tanner Ramsey (1-0) also catching passes.
W-G ran 19 times for 127 yards and five TDs. Oliver Potter (3-72, 1 TD) led the way, with McCaulley (8-46, 3 TDs) and Moran (4-3, 1 TD) aiding the cause.
Polich and McCaulley both recovered fumbles, with McCaulley returning an interception two yards. Fourteen tackles (four for a loss of yards) by Potter led the defense, with Jalen Trudeau having eight stops (1 TFL) and Kolby Fogarty 7.5 denials (2.5 TFL) adding to the pressure.
Moran scored two two-point conversions and Brayden Simons one, with Abraham Bell good on 1-of-2 PAT kicks.
W-G hosts NW Webster Friday. The Cougars (1-6, 1-3) have defeated only Belmond-Klemme (42-6) this season. They have 724 total passing yards for seven TDs while tossing 12 interceptions. The team has rushed for 450 yards and six scores.
