BONDURANT — The 2017 season got off to an ugly start for Woodward-Granger, but the Hawks bounced back to finish 3-3 at the Skip Anderson Classic, hosted by Bondurant-Farrar, Saturday.
W-G began play with losses of 22-20 and 21-15 to Boone and of 21-18 and 21-10 to Des Moines Roosevelt, with a 15-21, 21-16, 13-15 loss to Gilbert leaving the Hawks winless in their original pool.
That sent the team into a bracket with Burlington Notre Dame, Davis County and Perry, where W-G was hardly tested. The Hawks flew past Perry, 21-5 and 21-6, and BND 21-9, 21-7. A 21-11, 21-15 win over Davis County helped even the record for the day.
Ashley Gales led W-G with a combined 24 kills Saturday, with Anna Tague adding 21 kills, Alissa Smeltzer 20, Alyssa Bice 17, Natalie Weaver 10 and Emma Drake four. Bice finished with 45 assists and Drake with 39 assists, with Ashlyn Soelberg providing 34 digs, Drake seven, Kaycee Major seven, Marissa Pasker six, Katelyn Bandstra five and both Bice and Smeltzer four apiece.
Bice served 34-of-37 with 14 aces, with Tague 34-of-37 with six aces. Drake was 42-47-10 behind the line, with Bandstra 38-41-13 and Soelberg 23-29-3 while Smeltzer finished 18-20-7 and Gales 11-15-6.
