W-G volleyball team finishes 2-2 against large school competition

ELDRIDGE — The annual trip to the North Scott Invitational is one Woodward-Granger head coach said last week is “a test for us that I always look forward to.”

Jackson’s squad finished 2-2 Saturday at the event to see their record move to 12-5 overall after wins over North Scott and Burlington sandwiched losses Quincy, Illinois, and Clinton.

Play began with the Hawks scoring a 21-11, 12-21, 15-11 win against the hosts, with the Blue Devils from south down the Mississippi River scoring a 21-8, 21-8 over W-G. Clinton downed W-G, 2-0, with the River Queens surviving, 21-18, 21-17, but the Hawks ended the tourney on a high note with a 21-16, 22-20 win over the Grayhounds of Burlington.

Mary Hansen led W-G with a combined 21 kills at the event, with Bree Lesch adding 20 kills and Olivia McCune 18 kills. Julie Pitman played well defensively at the net in recording eight blocks, with McCune making three blocks, Ashley Gales two and Alyssa Bice and Hansen one each.

Bice led the team with 41 assists, with Hansen making 21. Lesch’s 47 digs was a team-best, with Kara Bodensteiner providing 31 digs, Bice 20, Kaycee Major 17, Hansen 10 and McCune nine.

McCune was 29-of-31 serving with two aces, with Lesch 28-of-31 with three aces. Bice was 21-24-2 behind the line, Major 19-22-4, Hansen 14-20-4 and Bodensteiner 9-10-1.

W-G hosts Ogden Thursday in a return to West Central Conference action. The Hawks will then play in the Ballard Invitational Saturday.
