
TRURO, Iowa — Five of the 10 Woodward-Granger wrestlers in action Saturday managed to reach the podium at the Rich Gray Invitational, a 19-team event hosted by Interstate-35.
Albia edged Ballard, 183.5-181.5, for top team honors, with Central Springs third at 170. Woodward-Granger, despite leaving four of 13 weight classes open, still managed to score 94 points to finish eighth overall.
W-G senior Dustin Harney finished 3-1 at 160 pounds to improve to 21-4 on the season. He won twice by decision and once by fall to place third.
Also third for the Hawks was 106-pounder Alex Saxton (27-6), who was 3-1 with a pair of pins and a victory by technical fall.
Peyton Nixon (10-5) was 2-2 with a tech fall and a pin to finish fourth at 132, with Alex Evans (25-9) 3-1 with three pins while placing fifth at 220 while Oliver Potter (13-12) was sixth at 145 after a 3-2 mark that included a trio of pins.
Holdon Heard (16-19) was 2-2 at 120 and Brayden Simons (21-14) 2-2 at 152, with both winning twice by fall. Kolby Fogarty (25-11) was 2-2 at 170 with a pin and a decision while James Dorrian (21-15) was 1-2 at 126 with a pin.
Also in action was Tjaden Smeltzer (15-20), who was unable to record a win in two matches at 138 pounds.
The Hawks did not have entries at 113, 182, 195 and 285 pounds.
W-G will join Boone and West Des Moines Valley for a quadrangular at Urbandale Thursday before competing in the AC/GC Invitational Saturday.
