
STUART — The second half of the wrestling season started on a strong note for the Woodward-Granger matmen Tuesday as the Hawks won all three of their duals at a West Central Valley quadrangular.
W-G started with a 44-31 win over East Union, with a 48-26 victory over WCV following while a 63-12 triumph over Exira-Elk Horn/Kimballton closed the meet for the Hawks. In other action, East Union topped E-EH/K, 54-18, and WCV, 42-33, with WCV a 72-6 victor against E-EH/K.
Seven Hawk grapplers finished with three wins at the meet, as Hunter Pierce (106 pounds), Tate Lettow (120), Colt Palmer (126), Austin Scharlau (152), Tanner Vermaas (182), Cody Fisher (195) and Alex Kirton (285) all collected a trio of victories. All received one forfeit, with Lettow winning twice by forfeit and once by decision.
Pierce won by fall and by decision, Palmer and Scharlau by a pair of pins apiece while Vermaas scored a technical fall and a pin. Fisher won his two contested matches via decision and pin, with Kirton twice winning via pinfall.
Gabe Yingst was 2-1 at 145 with a pin and a win by forfeit, with Tyler Lawernson (220) 2-1 with a pinfall victory and a win by disqualification. Jayden Dorenkamp’s two wins by forfeit at 132 and a forfeit to Cole Carman at 138 accounted for the remainder of the W-G victories.
W-G returns to the mat Saturday with a visit to the Winterset Invitational. The Hawks will join AC/GC at Van Meter Jan. 12 and then compete Jan. 14 in the Perry Invitational.
