WAUKEE, Iowa — The Waukee Police Department imposed a lockdown on Waukee schools Wednesday morning after a gunman was reported moving toward the schools.
At 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, Westcom Communications received a phone call reporting a white male, age 20, who was wearing black clothes and backpack and was thought to be carrying a rifle and walking in the direction of the Waukee Community School District’s secondary campus.
Waukee High School, Prairieview, Waukee Middle School and the Waukee Community School District administration office were immediately put on a precautionary external lockdown.
Classes continued with their normal schedules throughout the lockdown. Fifth-grade students at the Waukee Stadium for Track and Field Day were relocated to their school buildings.
After a through search, law enforcement determined there was no immediate threat to any district facility or to the public. Waukee High School, Prairieview, Waukee Middle School and the district administration office ended the external lockdown about 1 p.m., and school will dismiss Wednesday afternoon at the normal times.
