A West Des Moines man was arrested Wednesday in connection with an incident in a West Des Moines motel Monday in which he allegedly smothered a Des Moines woman in the presence of two minor children.

Jonathan Jordan Jones, 26, of 7255 Lake Dr., West Des Moines, was charged with first-offense domestic abuse assault-bodily injury or mental illness and child endangerment.

The incident occurred about 1 a.m. Monday in a West Des Moines motel, where a verbal dispute between Jones and the female victim became physical when Jones allegedly “laid across her body, using his full body weight to cause injury to her sternum and inhibiting her ability to take a full breath,” according to court records.

The victim “became frightened at her inability to have full respiration” and after asking Jones “to get off,” the victim” bit him on the arm,” according to court records.

In response, Jones allegedly began “pushing her face into the mattress and pulling her hair,” when one of the two minor children sleeping in the same room awoke “and cried, saying, ‘Let mommy go,'” according to court records.

The victim afterward sought hospital treatment for “her prolonged pain and discomfort in her chest,” according to court records.

Jones is held in the Dallas County Jail in advance of an initial appearance in Dallas County District Court.
