A West Des Moines man was arrested Monday after allegedly trying to smother a West Des Moines woman.

Alec Scott Frazier, 26, of 680 S. 68th St., West Des Moines, was charged with domestic abuse assault-impeding flow of air/blood, obstruction of emergency communications and first-offense possession of a controlled substance-marijuana.

The incident began about 5:15 p.m. Monday at a residence in the 600 block of 68th Street, where officers of the West Des Moines Police Department responded to a report from a caller who said that “a female came to his apartment and told him a male tried to suffocate her,” according to court records.

The officers made contact with the victim, who told the officers that Frazier allegedly “assaulted her by grabbing her shoulders and taking her to the bedroom,” where he allegedly “had his hands placed over her nose and mouth” and then “placed her on the bed and began to wrap a blanket around her head,” according to court records.

The victim told the officers that during the alleged assault “she struggled to breathe and thought she was going to pass out,” according to court records.

The officers observed on the victim “red marks on her waist, on her neck and scratch marks/bruising on both arms,” according to court records.

The officers made contact with Frazier “in his mother’s garage,” where the victim’s cell phone was also found, according to court records.

Upon detainment, Frazier was allegedly found to be in possession of “a white ‘Cloudz’ marijuana/THC labeled vape pen,” according to court records.

Frazier is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $2,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing May 21 in Dallas County District Court.

Frazier was arrested in Storm Lake in 2020 on a charge of first-offense domestic abuse assault. The charge was dismissed in 2022 in Buena Vista District Court.
