A West Des Moines woman was arrested for drunk driving Monday evening after trying to elude law enforcement and resisting arrest.

Cynthia Lynn Hunting, 37, of 9005 Bridgewood Blvd., West Des Moines, was charged with first-offense OWI, possession of a controlled substance, eluding-25 mph over limit, assault on peace officers and other, interference with official acts, reckless driving, speeding,

The incident began about 6:45 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Ashworth Road and 88th Street in West Des Moines, where a Dallas County Deputy Sheriff initiated a traffic stop on a 2007 Ford Edge, driven by Hunting.

The deputy made contact with Hunting and perceived “a strong odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle,” according to court records.

Hunting allegedly told the deputy she “could do what she wanted” and “then drove away from the stop after being told not to do so,” according to court records.

Hunting proceeded south on 88th Streets, “reaching speeds of 80 mph in a 35 mph zone,” according to court records.

Hunting exited the vehicle outside her residence on Bridgewood Boulevard and was walking toward her residence when the deputy “assisted” her “to the ground, attempting to restrain her,” according to court records.

An Iowa State Patrol Trooper who assisted in Hunter’s restraint was allegedly “kicked” by her, and the arresting deputy’s “shoulder popped out” in the scuffle, requiring treatment by Dallas County EMS.

Hunting allegedly “admitted to eluding law enforcement to avoid getting an OWI,” according to court records.

Hunting is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $9,397.88 cash or surety bond. She is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Dallas County District Court.

Hunting was convicted of first-offense OWI and reckless driving in 2011 in Polk County District Court.
