The National Weather Service office in Johnston has issued a wind advisory for the Perry area until noon Wednesday and a wind chill advisory Thursday from midnight until noon, with high northwest winds expected to drive wind chill temperatures to minus 25 degrees.

Northwest winds of 20 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph, are forecast for the Perry area and portions of central and southern Iowa until noon Wednesday, with gusts apt to blow around unsecured objects and possibly bring down tree limbs and a few power lines, the NWS said.

Very cold wind chills are then expected from midnight Wednesday until noon Thursday across central and southern Iowa. Wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

The NWS said that the potential for blowing snow has decreased, so the winter weather advisory has been cancelled. Shallow blowing snow across roadways might still produce slick and snow-covered conditions at times, however.

Travelers should use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high-profile vehicle.

Along with Dallas County, the wind and wind chill advisories are in effect in Polk, Jasper, Adair, Madison, Warren, Marion, Mahaska, Adams, Union, Clarke, Lucas, Monroe, Wapello, Taylor, Ringgold, Decatur, Wayne, Appanoose and Davis counties.

Along with Perry, cities under the advisories include Waukee, Adel, Des Moines, Newton,
Greenfield, Stuart, Adair, Fontanelle, Winterset, Earlham, Indianola, Norwalk, Carlisle, Pella, Knoxville, Oskaloosa, Corning, Creston, Osceola, Chariton, Albia, Ottumwa, Bedford, Lenox, New Market, Mount Ayr, Lamoni, Leon, Corydon, Seymour, Allerton, Humeston, Centerville and Bloomfield.
