Visiting Winterset was hardly challenged on either side of a Raccoon River Conference set Tuesday, rolling to a pair of large-margin wins over host Perry.

Winterset (10-7, 7-4) had squeaked past visiting Perry (6-11, 0-10), 54-51, Jan. 7 but dominated the final three quarters in winning, 64-24, in the rematch.

The ninth-ranked Huskies (12-4, 8-3) were 61-28 victors over the Bluejays (3-12, 1-9) following a 71-30 win in the first meeting of the season between the two.

Winterset freshman guard Jena Young entered the game averaging 20.1 points per game and had torched Perry for 32 points in the Jan. 7 contest, but in Tuesday’s game was hamstrung by a Jayette defensive concentration and limited to just eight points.

Unfortunately for the hosts, their guests returned the favor, allowing Perry senior Molly Lutmer (22.4 ppg) to score only four points after she had poured in 27 in the first contest between the teams.

With the two leading scorers each negated, the first period was a close battle, ending with Winterset holding a 15-11 lead.

From that point on it was all Huskies, as the Jayettes repeatedly turned the ball over, shot poorly and surrendered offensive rebounds and easy put-back baskets throughout the final 24 minutes. Perry trailed, 29-16, at the half and 46-21 after three periods. The guests closed the game with an 18-3 spurt in the fourth stanza.

Jayna Kenney had 11 points for the hosts, with Lydia Olejniczak scoring seven points, Lutmer four and Ashley Cerna two. Kenney made two 3-pointers.

Lauren Carter’s 18 points and 13 from Thea Banning led Winterset. Abigail Benshoof had nine points and Young eight, with six from Bridget Stover, four from Ava Lowden, with Darci Wiseman, Riley Kious and Raegan Coobs adding two points apiece. Benshoof hit three treys for the guests.

The highly-regarded Huskies boys — who reached the state semifinals last season — quickly took charge of the second game. The first quarter ended with Winterset leading, 19-9, with the intermission seeing Perry trailing by a 36-17 margin. That deficit swelled to 57-24 eight minutes later, with each team scoring just four points in the final eight minutes.

Brendan Ivory had 15 points for Perry, with June Reisberg adding five. Two points apiece from Keghan West, Chase Archer, Gage Laws and Kato Dougan accounted for the remainder of the Perry offense. Ivory connected three times beyond the 3-point arc and Reisberg once.

Easton Darling led all scorers with 20 points for the Huskies, with Brock Johnson providing 16 and Dawon Forgy nine. Five points from Nathan Avery, three from Hunter Farr and two each from Levi Gurwell, Sam Schrodt, Blake Bellamy and Casey Young capped the scoring list for the visitors.

Perry returns to action Friday with a trip to Ballard. A Tuesday trip to Boone follows, with Perry hosting Ballard Feb. 13 and Bondurant-Farrar Feb. 14.
