Winterset dismisses Perry netters with sweep

WINTERSET — One of the two Raccoon River Conference teams facing each other in Madison County Tuesday was going to record their first league win of the season. As it turned out, that team was Winterset, as the Huskies swept Perry, 3-0, to improve to 5-13 overall and 1-5 in RRC action.

The loss dropped Perry to 3-19 on the season and 0-6 in conference play. Winterset was able to prevail with a 25-21 victory in the first set, then dominated the ensuing set for a 25-13 win and 2-0 match lead. A 25-19 win from the hosts in the third set ended the contest.

Jo Diw led the Perry offense with nine kills, with Grace Marburger adding seven, Adrian Thompson four, Maddie West two and Sid Vancil one. Vancil distributed 16 assists, with Diw and West each having one assist.

Syd Guerra had seven digs and Vancil six to pace Perry, with Diw making four digs, Marburger three and West two.

Diw had two aces on 7-of-9 serving, with Vancil 9-10-1 and Guerra 8-8-1. Thompson was 7-of-8 behind the line and West 5-of-6 with Marburger 6-of-9.

Perry hosts the Jayette Invitational Thursday, with action beginning at 4:30 p.m. The hosts will face Ballard, Roland-Story, Saydel and Woodward-Granger in pool play.
