An 18-year-old Winterset man was killed and his 21-year-old passenger was injured early Sunday when the pickup truck they were traveling in crashed on a gravel road in rural Madison County in attempting to elude law enforcement.

Memphis Isaac Kincaid Pickett, 18, of Winterset was driving the 1997 Chevrolet Silverado when it crashed about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 1800 block of Wind Wood Trail in rural Madison County.

Quentin Lane Siefkas, 21, of Peru, Iowa, was a front-seat passenger in the truck.

According to a crash report by the Iowa State Patrol, Pickett’s vehicle was “traveling at a high rate of speed” while “eluding a fully marked Madison County Deputy” patrol vehicle.

Pickett’s vehicle “failed to negotiate a curve to the left in the gravel roadway,” exited the roadway to the right and entered the ditch, “where it was impacted by trees” and a “wired fence.”

Pickett was pronounced deceased at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

Siefkas “was trapped and was freed by mechanical means.” He was transported to MercyOne Medical Center in Des Moines by the Madison County EMS. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.

“Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the pursuit and crash,” the ISP report said.
