Following news of the death of longtime PHS Principal Dan Marburger, the Perry School Board has canceled its Sunday special meeting and moved it to Monday.

“Today’s news of the loss of Principal Dan Marburger is devastating,” said PCSD Superintendent Clark Wicks in a statement issued Sunday afternoon. “In honor of Dan and his family and all affected by Dan’s passing, today’s Perry Community School District board meeting is being postponed.”

Monday’s meeting of the Perry School Board will now take place at 3 p.m. in the Towncraft building at 1122 Willis Ave.

The Perry City Council will meet at the same place at 6 p.m. Monday.

Wicks also announced a pause in the school district’s return plan.

“Our school reopening plan is on hold until further notice,” the superintendent said. “Elementary teachers will not return as planned tomorrow. We will still offer optional Hamilton Grief support services on Monday, Jan. 15 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Perry Elementary School for any school staff members who would like to attend.”

Wicks, an employees of the Perry Community School District since 1989, has known Marburger, a Sabula, Iowa, native and Central College graduate since he came to Perry High School as assistant principal in 1995.

“Today is a difficult and heartbreaking day for all of us who know and love the Marburger family,” Wicks said.

The school district also issued a statement Sunday evening: “We share our deepest condolences with the Marburger family today on the passing of Dan Marburger. Dan was a tremendous leader in our school district and a loving husband, father and grandfather.  Our school community is heartbroken by Dan’s death. For nearly three decades, Dan was ingrained in every aspect of our Perry Community School District environment, and we are feeling the immense loss of a devoted and caring colleague.”
