Woodward-Granger boys open track season at Winterset

WINTERSET — Woodward-Granger sent their boys thinclads to Winterset Friday to open the outdoor season, with the Hawks placing in four relays and one field event.

The 4×800 foursome of Bryce Achenbach, Ian Thompson, Jack Grell and Cody Garland finished third, in 9 minutes, 5.91 seconds, to record the top finish for W-G.

Three relays — the 4×200, 4×800 and sprint medley — all finished fifth. Thompson, Chandler Cavanaugh, Josh Saak and Marcus McConahey ran the 4×200 in 1:40.37, with Cavanaugh, McConahey, Thompson and Austin Scharlau completing the 4×400 in 3:47.85 while Cavanaugh, McConahey, Brendan Bird and Payton Tague finished the sprint medley in 1:41.83.

Bird’s spin of 116 feet, 8 inches earned fifth place in the discus, the only other points tallied by the Hawks.

Cale Pritchett tied for seventh in the high jump after clearing 5’4, with Achenbach ninth in the long jump with a leap of 18’5 while Alex Kirton was 16th in the shot put with a push of 36’4.

Saak, Scharlau, Gage Lisle and Pacey Moats finished eighth in the distance medley in 4:17.74, with Tague, Thompson, Nick Moser and J.P. Nixon crossing ninth in the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:11.3. Moser ran the 110 high hurdles (18th, 22.56) and Tague the 400 low hurdles (9th, 1:03.87) for the Hawks.

Jay Dohrenkamp (19th, 13.1), Lisle (18th, 26.42) and Achenbach (11th, 57.15) ran in the 100, 200 and 400. Cody Garland was ninth in the 800 in 2:20.94, with Grell placing 10th in the 1600 in 5:13.36 while Alex Bice crossed 14th, in 11:55.44, in the 3200.

Both W-G teams will be in action this afternoon at the Panorama Invitational before hosting the coed Hugh Cavanaugh Invitational Thursday.
