WOODWARD — Dalaney Bice has had some big hits for the Woodward-Granger softball team this summer. On Monday it was her arm, and not her bat, that carried the Hawks to a victory.
Bice struck out 11 and yielded just one hit and two walks as W-G (20-10, 13-1) blanked Madrid (13-11, 12-7) in WCC action.
The only run of the contest came in the bottom of the fourth, with courtesy runner Kayley Dresback scoring on a Kendra Husmann base hit.
Meagan Bandstra and Miranda Aunspach also had base hits, with Riley Jamison hitting a single and a triple.
The win sets up a showdown doubleheader Thursday for the conference championship when Class 2A No. 9 Van Meter (22-7, 13-0) visits Woodward. The first game begins at 5 p.m. and if the Hawks can win the contest, it would turn the nightcap against the Bulldogs into a winner-takes-all scrum, provided Des Moines Christian does not pull an upset against Van Meter tonight.
