Woodward-Granger matmen finish sixth at Ogden Duals

OGDEN — The Woodward-Granger wrestlers finished with a 2-3 team record at the Ogden Duals Saturday to place sixth in the 10-team field. The Hawks are now 13-4 in dual action for the season.

W-G fell to Gilbert, 36-30, in their opening action before bouncing back to claim a 45-33 victory over Carroll. Humboldt posted a 54-22 win over W-G, who then topped a five-man Greene County squad, 61-11. Host Ogden claimed fifth place with a 42-34 win in the final dual of the day for W-G.

Humboldt emerged as the top team after defeating North Butler, 48-30, in the championship dual. Kuemper Catholic topped Gilbert, 39-30, for third place, with Caroll defeating Coon Rapids-Bayard, 46-28, for seventh place while Clarke prevailed against Greene County, 39-24, for the ninth spot.

W-G had one wrestler finish the day with a 5-0 mark while five others posted 4-1 records.

Hunter Pierce posted a 7-0 win over Caden Neumann (CAR) before pinning Grant Gardner (GLB) in 1 minute, 59 seconds at 106 pounds. He received two forfeits and also pinned Humboldt’s Aaron Diesburg (4:59) to finish the tourney unblemished.

Ty Turner (113 pounds) won once by forfeit, with pins over Kane Borgeson (GC, 3:09), Jade Lange (HMB, 1:05) and Taylo Engleen (OGD, 1:44) while dropping only a 2-0 decision to Gilbert’s Stephen Stuka.

Cole Carman scored an 8-0 major decision over Issac Ireland (GC) while competing at 138 pounds. At 132 he pinned both Garrison Holck (GLB, 5:12) and Zach Waterbury (OGD, 3:00), won once by forfeit and lost by fall to Zane Russell (HMB, 1:55).

Race Brant lost a 16-1 technical fall to sixth-ranked Tommy Bradshaw of Greene County, but scored pins over Colton Monson (HMB, 1:41) and Landon Hinman (CAR, 1:26) while posting a 10-3 win over Reldon Miller (GLB) and a 17-4 major decision over Harrison Haglund (OGD).

A pair of wins by forfeit and pins of Dylan Millermon (CAR, 2:58) and Noah Ante (GLB, 3:53) accounted for the four wins tallied by Aaron Sperling at 170. He lost by fall to Malcolm Boyd (HMB, 3:54).

Tanner Vermaas was 4-1 at 182, with his lone loss coming to Class 1A No. 3 Austin Lentz (OGD), who prevailed for a 6-2 decision. Vermaas received one forfeit, defeated Jack Currans (GLB), 7-4, recorded a 14-4 major decision against Trayton Harris (HMB) and pinned Dylan Delp (CAR, 49 seconds).

Ryler Saxton finished 2-3 at 126 with a forfeit and a 57-second pin against Devon Schweitzer (CAR) while W-G’s Colt Palmer (120) and Thomas Govig (195) were both 1-4, with each winning by forfeit.

Josh Saak was 2-3 at 145, winning once by forfeit and with a 4-1 decision over Gilbert’s Eric Swart while Hawk teammate Austin Scharlau finished 1-2 at 160 with his win coming on a 5-0 decision against Gilbert’s Russell Jennett.

Jacob Kepford ended the tourney 3-2 at 220 pounds. He won twice by forfeit and pinned Carroll’s Trystan Stewart in 5:18.

W-G left the 285 and 138 (with the exception of one match in which Saxton competed) open. The Hawks return to the mat Thursday when they join Bondurant-Farrar at a triangular hosted by Ballard, with a Saturday visit to the WCC Dual Tournament at West Central Valley with final pre-holiday action.
