Influenza activity is rising in Iowa and in Dallas County at this time. Outpatient visits for influenza-like illness are above the normal baseline, and activity is expected to continue during the coming weeks.

Help prevent influenza and other illnesses by remembering the three C’s:

  1. Clean – wash your hands regularly, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
  2. Cover – cover your mouth when you cough and sneeze, and dispose of tissues properly.
  3. Contain – do not share utensils and pens, avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose, and stay home from school or work when you are ill.

The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older. It is not too late to get vaccinated. Flu vaccination can reduce flu illnesses and prevent flu-related hospitalizations.

The CDC also recommends prompt treatment with influenza antiviral drugs for people who are very sick with flu or people with fragile health.

For more information on preventing influenza, visit the CDC website. If you still need an influenza vaccine, contact your health care provider or Dallas County Public Health at 515-993-3750 or 515-465-2483.
