Joann Hanson, 82, of Carroll and formerly of Perry passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017, at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 18 at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Perry. Visitation was Monday, April 17 from 2-7 p.m., with family present from 5-7 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home in Perry. Burial will be in the Violet Hill Cemetery at Perry at a later date.

Betty “Joann” Hanson was born July 13, 1934, in Perry, Iowa, to George Washington and Martha Ann (Atwood) Salmon.

She attended school at Perry High School, graduating with the class of 1953.

She was united in marriage to Roger Lee Hanson at Wayne, Neb., Sept. 6, 1956.

She worked as a bookkeeper in Wayne, at Ranks Department Store in Council Bluffs, as a residential painting and as the manager of Country View Mobile Home Estates.

Early in her life she accepted the Lord into her heart. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Perry and in later years the Kiron Baptist Church.

An organization close to her heart was the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

She loved her family, children and grandchildren.

She enjoyed shopping, making homemade ice cream and fudge and watching her children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

Joann loved visiting her family and enjoyed the journey going to their homes. While on the drive, she liked listening to gospel music, stopping at restaurants and looking for garage sales.

She liked dancing, roller skating, embroidering, playing cards, talking to loved ones on the phone, tending her flowers in the yard, gardening and watching various preachers on TV.

Joann loved hosting meals and picnics with her family.

Joann’s favorite sports teams were the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Creighton Blue Jays and the Chicago Cubs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Martha Salmon; siblings, Lena Garland, Estellene Salmon, Mary Headlee, Opal Knaeble, Orville Salmon, Alice MacNorius, Doris Mills, George Salmon and Katherine Kratz; a grandson, Andrew Lee Chambers; and a granddaughter, Jessica Joann Bandow Mancillla.

She is survived by her husband, Roger Hanson of Carroll; children, Diane Chambers of Omaha, Donna (Stan) Bandow of Jonestown, Texas, Dan (Karen) Hanson of West Des Moines, Julie Hanson of Ozark, Mo., and Laura (Kowboy) Wulf of Nixa, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Angela Yoder, Caitlin Dillon, Colby Bandow, Kyle Bandow, Emily Hanson, Sarah Hanson, Brandi Merrick, Joel Merrick and Cory Christiansen; 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, William (Barb) Salmon of Des Moines, Martha Ann McDowell of Woodward and Leone Boruff of Omaha; and numerous nieces and nephews.
