The National Weather Service offices in Johnston have issued a tornado watch for the Perry area until 9 p.m. Friday.
A few tornadoes are likely, with a couple of intense tornadoes possible, the NWS said.
Scattered large hail and isolated very large hail, with diameters to 2.5 inches, are likely as are winds gusting to 70 mph.
Along with Dallas County, the tornado watch is in effect for Adair, Adams, Audubon, Carroll, Cass, Clarke, Crawford, Decatur, Greene, Guthrie, Madison, Ringgold, Taylor and Union counties.
