VAN METER — Host and 10th ranked Van Meter brought an end to the Woodward-Granger girls basketball season Tuesday with a 56-35 win in their Class 2A Region 4 quarterfinal.

The Bulldogs (19-3) struggled to pull away from the Hawks (8-15) in the first half and held only a 25-20 advantage at the intermission.

The second half, however, was a different tale, as a 15-6 third quarter opened a 40-26 gulf, a margin the guests simply could not overcome in suffering the loss.

Mackenzie Roberts did it all for Van Meter, scoring 20 points while grabbing 12 rebounds, blocking three shots, making three assists and coming away with three steals. Emily Roberts had eight points and Bailey Junge and Natalie Barth six each to help lead the hosts.

Mary Hansen led W-G with 10 points, with Riley Jamison and Kendra Husmann scoring six points apiece while Maggi Mallon tallied five points. Alyssa Bice had three points, Kayley Dresback and Lisa Pitman two each and Riley Kirton one.

The loss was the final prep contest for Hawk seniors Hansen, Husmann, Jamison, Kirton, Mallon and Sara Smiley.
