Football season has started, which means the tradition of tailgating and watch parties will be happening for the next few months.

When getting together with family and friends for sporting events, keep in mind these tips so that everyone has a safe and enjoyable time.

Tailgating and grilling often go hand in hand, but when it comes to food, there is a risk of foodborne illness if you don’t take safety measures. Use a refrigerator or cooler with plenty of ice to store perishable food until you’re ready to eat and again within two hours of being cooked.

Be especially careful with meat — pack it in separate containers, and keep cooking utensils separate. Use a food thermometer to ensure everything is cooked to their minimum safe temperatures. Visit the USDA website to see the recommended temperatures for each meat product.

Grills also pose a fire risk, so keep an extinguisher nearby when the grill is going. Set up your grill in a well-ventilated area, and turn off the gas as soon as you’re done. Make sure everything is completely cooled before packing it up or heading into the stadium.

If you like to have alcoholic drinks during your sports celebrations, be sure to plan a safe way to get home. Eat throughout the day, and drink plenty of water. In fact, it’s a good idea to bring a water bottle with you no matter what.

Finally, check the weather before you go so you can take extra measures to either stay cool or keep warm as the seasons start to change.
