Halloween is a fun time of year when our community comes together to celebrate with costumes, treats and decorations.

When you think of scary things associated with this holiday, injuries might not be the first thing that come to mind, but kids can easily get hurt if precautions aren’t taken when Trick-or-Treating. Keep these tips in mind to keep your family safe and healthy this Halloween.

One of the main concerns on Beggars’ Night is car safety. Children should wear bright, reflective costumes or reflective tape so they can be easily seen by drivers.

Kids should also cross the street at corners or crosswalks after looking both ways. Drivers should keep their headlights on and drive slowly to avoid accidents.

Check to make sure costumes aren’t tripping hazards and that kids are able to see clearly if wearing masks or other face-wear.

It’s also a good idea to check the labels on face paint to ensure they’re FDA approved and safe for skin. One way to avoid allergic reactions to paint is to do a small patch test first.

Be aware that wearing decorative contact lenses without an eye exam and prescription can lead to eye infections and injuries.

At the end of the night, parents and caregivers should check candy for allergens and potential tampering before letting the little ones enjoy a couple of sweet treats.

If you’re handing out treats this year, be sure to remove any tripping hazards, and keep your outdoor lights on. Also consider offering non-sugary items, such as glow sticks, pencils, toothbrushes or other small toys.
