Many tips for living a healthy life, such as eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep, apply to almost everyone regardless of age or gender. However, there are a few things that women should be aware of it when it comes to their health specifically.

Women are at a higher risk of developing certain health conditions compared to men. Two of the most common examples are osteoporosis and thyroid disease.

Osteoporosis is a disease that weakens your bones. In the U.S., 80% of cases are in women. Women aged 65 or over should have a bone density test done at least once. Depending on the test results, your doctor might recommend rescreening every few years.

Women are also up to eight times more likely than men to experience thyroid issues. Signs of hypothyroidism include slow heart rate, fatigue, weight gain, sensitivity to cold and depressed mood. Signs of hyperthyroidism include fast heart rate, difficulty sleeping, weight loss, sensitivity to heat and feeling anxious or irritable.

There are also certain cancers affecting women that should be screened for on a regular basis. For instance, cervical cancer screenings, or pap smears, should start at age 21 and be performed every 3 years. The HPV vaccine, given to adolescents aged 11-12, can prevent cervical cancer caused by HPV.

One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. Mammogram screenings for breast cancer should start at age 40 and be performed every year for those with an average risk of the disease.

Encourage the women in your life to talk to their primary care providers about their risks for these conditions and to make plans for living a long, healthy life.
