The number of older adults in our population is rising. The overall life expectancy in the U.S. is now 77.5 years, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, with many people living well into their 80s and 90s.
Aging can bring changes to our bodies and minds, but having a healthy lifestyle starting now can ease some of those changes and lead to a better quality of life for longer. Follow these tips to feel young at any age:
• Eat healthy: Focus on getting enough nutrients for your body by prioritizing fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean meats, and low-fat dairy.
• Keep your mind active: Activities like puzzles, reading, and learning new skills and hobbies can improve your memory and keep your mind active.
• Prevent falls: Older adults have a higher risk of falling and getting injured from a fall. To prevent this, remove tripping hazards in your home and get regular eye checkups and physical activity.
• Stay socially connected: Keeping relationships is important for mental health and feelings of belonging. Stay in touch with friends and family. Participate in community events or volunteer to meet new people.
• Exercise regularly: Try to exercise a little bit every day. Do what you feel comfortable with and slowly work your way up to your goal.
Joining a group fitness class is a great way to get regular exercise while connecting with others. Contact your local rec centers to learn about the classes and memberships they offer.
There will be a six-week walking program for arthritis pain management called Walk With Ease starting Monday, Oct. 7 at the McCreary Community Building (MCB) in Perry. Call the MCB for more information at 515-465-5621.
Talk to your doctor before starting an exercise program or if you have any aging-related questions or concerns.
