‘But the greatest of these is love’

Valentine’s Day isn’t just about flowers and chocolate. It’s also a time to celebrate love in all its forms.

Whether it’s with a romantic partner, friends and family, our community or ourselves, loving relationships are an important part of the human experience. Beyond the warm and fuzzy feelings it brings, love has many health benefits that can improve our wellbeing.

First, love acts as a natural stress reliever. When we connect with others, such as through hugs, conversations or simply spending time together, our bodies release oxytocin, which is the “love hormone.” This powerful chemical helps lower blood pressure and reduce cortisol levels, easing stress and providing a sense of calm.

Love is linked to other mental health benefits, too. Positive relationships can reduce feelings of loneliness and depression while creating a sense of belonging and security. Having a support system can make dealing with life’s challenges a little easier. Plus, connecting with others tends to be a great mood booster.

Love even provides physical health benefits. Studies suggest that people with happy, supportive relationships tend to have lower rates of heart disease. Love helps the body to regulate stress hormones and reduce inflammation, which are two factors that can boost heart health. Those same factors can also strengthen the immune system. Studies have shown that individuals with strong social support systems tend to get sick less often.

Finally, loving yourself, as in having self-respect and practicing self-care, is also important. It can lead to more confidence and resiliency while reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. Be kind to yourself and take some time to do the things you enjoy, too.

This Valentine’s Day, spread the love, and remember that it isn’t just good for your soul but for your health, too.
