Many people observe summer holidays, such as the Fourth of July, with cookouts, fireworks and other outdoor activities. With the fun also come some risks though — from foodborne illness to firework injuries. Fortunately, taking a few safety precautions can help you and your loved ones enjoy celebrations safely.

Grilling is a holiday favorite, but it’s important to handle food properly to avoid food poisoning. Keep raw meat separate from cooked foods, and use different utensils and plates to avoid cross-contamination.

Cook meats to safe internal temperatures: 160°F for ground beef and 165°F for poultry. When it’s hot and sunny, avoid leaving perishable foods out for more than one hour.

Backyard BBQs can also pose fire and burn risks. Always grill away from your home, deck railings or dry vegetation. Keep children and pets at least three feet away, and never leave a hot grill unattended. Before firing up a gas grill, check hoses for leaks or cracks, and always remember to keep a fire extinguisher nearby just in case.

Unfortunately, fireworks-related injuries are all too common this time of year. Keep children safe by opting for sparkler-alternatives, such as glow sticks or LED wands. Only adults should light fireworks. Never try to relight a dud, and keep a safe distance once fireworks are lit.

Lastly, be sure to have a bucket of water or a hose nearby. For the safest celebration, consider watching a professional fireworks show instead of lighting your own.

For a stress-free holiday, keep safety at the front of your mind when it comes to other activities, too. If swimming or boating, always supervise children, use the buddy system and wear a life jacket if in an open body of water. Drink plenty of water, wear sunscreen use insect-repellent when outside.

With just a few simple precautions, you can ensure your Fourth of July celebrations are both fun and injury free.
