Sexual health is a vital part of overall wellbeing, yet it is often overlooked due to discomfort or stigma. As we head into sexual health awareness month, it is important to consider how we can protect ourselves in this part of life.

One important aspect of sexual health is regular testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Many STIs, such as chlamydia or gonorrhea, can go unnoticed but still cause long-term health problems if not treated. Health experts recommend that sexually active individuals under age 25 get tested annually, and more frequently if they have new or multiple partners.

Be sure to also keep an eye out for common signs of STIs, including:

  • sores, bumps and blisters
  • pain or burning
  • itching or irritation
  • unusual discharge

For parents and guardians, talking to teenagers about consent is just as crucial. Consent means giving clear, voluntary and enthusiastic permission to engage in any sexual activity. Teach teens that “no” always means no and that silence or uncertainty is not consent. Encourage them to respect their own boundaries as well as those of others.

Use these conversations as an opportunity to discuss contraception, too. If you need some help, your teen’s doctor or school nurse can provide more information. When teens feel like they have a trusted adult they can discuss sexual health with, they are more likely to make smart, informed choices.

Your family doctor can also answer any questions you have about the HPV vaccine, which is recommended for both boys and girls around age 11 or 12.
