Imagine a classroom in Iowa where one in six children struggles with something far more serious than homework — obesity. It’s a reality facing many families in our state, and it isn’t just about the number on the scale.

Childhood obesity is concerning because it often carries into adulthood. Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of developing high blood pressure, type-2 diabetes, strokes, heart disease and several types of cancer. Obese children are also more prone to bone and join problems, depression and being the target of bullying.

Childhood obesity is a complex problem stemming from many factors, such as limited access to healthy foods, reduced physical activity and increased screen time. Fortunately, families and communities can take simple steps to promote healthy lifestyles and set our youth on the path to have long, healthy lives.

Following the 5-2-1-0 framework can make living a healthy lifestyle easier to remember:

• 5: Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables daily.
• 2: Limit recreational screen time to two hours or fewer each day.
• 1: Get at least one hour of physical activity daily.
• 0: Consume zero sugary drinks. Water is best instead

Parents and guardians can support these habits by making healthy foods available, modeling active routines and planning fun family activities, such as biking or gardening.

Building consistent sleep routines and reducing screen time also support healthy weight and emotional health.

By adopting healthy lifestyles, not only will we encourage the next generation to do the same, but we will all benefit from a higher quality of life.
