don-williams-signAn Ames man died Saturday in Don Williams Lake north of Ogden when his dog broke through the ice on the lake, and the man himself broke through and drowned trying to save his dog.

The Boone County Sheriff’s office said the man, Michael Carr, 56, was found floating in the lake by passing motorists who first saw a dog swimming in the water.

When they investigated the swimming dog, the witnesses found Carr face down in the water and immediately called 911. Carr was deceased when first responders arrived, the Boone County Sheriff’s office said.

According to deputies at the scene, it is believed Carr was trying to rescue his dog from the water after the dog fell through the ice. He then broke through the ice and was unable to get out, the sheriff’s office said.

The dog was recovered and survived.

Also responding to the incident Saturday morning were the Ogden Police Department, Ogden First Responders, Boone Volunteer Fire Department, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the Boone County EMS.
