It might be hard to believe, but another winter is right around the corner. With colder weather approaching, many of us will soon begin to turn off our air conditioners and switch to our furnaces to stay warm.

If you are worried about how you will afford to heat your home, consider applying for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). LIHEAP helps qualifying low-income homeowners and renters pay a portion of their home heating costs.

The program does not cover businesses.

Enrolling in LIHEAP not only helps to keep you comfortable throughout the winter, but reduces your risk of health and safety issues that could occur if you don’t heat your home, such as illness, fire or eviction.

You must apply in the county where you reside. In Dallas County, you can apply through New Opportunities in Perry at 2814 First Avenue. Call their office at 515-465-5185 to make an appointment. Eligibility for LIHEAP is based on household income, household size, type of fuel and type of housing.

There are several items you will need to bring to your appointment:

  • Your most recent heating bill
  • Your most recent electric bill
  • Proof of Social Security numbers for everyone in your household
  • Proof of income for everyone in your household aged 19 and over from the past 30 days or year (whichever is easier or more beneficial for you). Examples include paycheck stubs, SSI, VA, unemployment, pensions, etc.

Those aged 60 years and over and/or those with disabilities are able to apply starting Oct. 1. All other households can apply starting Nov. 1. Applications are accepted first come-first serve.

Visit the New Opportunities website to learn more about LIHEAP and other available services.
