Food insecurity sometimes goes hand in hand with housing insecurity, and one Perry partnership is leading the way in meeting the specific needs of family bedrooms.

The Sleep Space project at Mt. Olivet Lutheran Church was the first recipient of a 100+ People for Perry grant in 2016, with the aim of providing bedding for people in need. The success of the program led to a second 100+ People for Perry award in 2022 as well as funding along the way from the Bock Family Foundation, the Wiese Foundation and St. Martin’s Episcopal Church and the Perry Elks Club.

The Optimist Club of Perry focuses its efforts on programs that benefit youth and has donated some 20 beds, including frames, headboards, box springs and mattresses, to families in need since partnering with the Sleep Space project. The Optimists supply beds for the kids’ rooms, and the Sleep Space provides for the adults.

“There is nothing more important for a growing child than a good night’s sleep,” said Optimist Club President Zack Cregeen. “We’re try to ensure that every child in Perry has a safe and comfortable bed to sleep in, with Mt. Olivet’s Sleep Space adding the bedding, blankets and pillows.”

Gene Grell of Woodward is both an Optimist Club member and a member of the Mt. Olivet flock, so he facilitates the partnership and accepts referrals to families in need.

“This program is meeting a real need here in Perry,” Grell said. “Volunteers are always welcome to join us in these efforts.”
