A barn burned to the ground Wednesday morning in Dallas County on a farm at the corner of 120th Street and Iris Avenue, just north of Bouton on the Boone County line.

The farm is owned by Carvel and Phyllis Naeve of Woodward.

Rick and Lisa Thielen of 864 340th St., neighbors to the Naeve farm, reported the fire shortly before 7 a.m.

“I went out back and thought I could smell smoke,” said Lisa Thielen. “I saw white smoke coming from over here and told Rick we’d better call. When we looked again the smoke was black.”

Rick Thielen said when he arrived the eastward-facing front of the barn was fully engulfed, and the fire appeared to move from front to back.

Boone County Deputy Sheriff Brian Pontius responded to the incident. He said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

The Bouton Volunteer Fire Department fought the blaze, calling for mutual aid from the Minburn Volunteer Fire Department, Perry Volunteer Fire Department and Woodward Volunteer Fire Department.

There were no injuries to humans or livestock in the fire.

  1. I think the real story here is how the Bouton Fire Department did not respond at all to a fire in their own district. The story incorrectly reports that the Bouton Fire Department responded and requested mutual aid, but in reality the Bouton Fire Department did not respond to the call, and neighboring departments were dispatched in their place. It’s one thing to call on mutual aid for assistance, a perfectly acceptable and encouraged practice. It is quite another thing not to respond at all, and this is not the first time it has happened.
